How to Color the Mayan Pyramid

For children, this drawing presents a fun and exciting challenge. The pyramid can be colored in sandy, stone, or even ochre tones, using a mix of light brown and warm gray crayons or colored pencils. A great technique to try is side shading—using the side of the pencil to fill in the stone blocks with texture.

It’s a good idea to make the sides of the pyramid darker using deeper tones to create volume. For example, the left side can be colored with a richer brown to simulate natural shadow. To enhance the light-and-shadow effect, kids can blend with their finger or a paper blending tool.

The background offers a great opportunity to play with jungle greens—mixing different shades from olive to emerald will bring the scene to life. The clouds can be a soft sky blue or left white to make a light blue gradient sky pop.

For more advanced kids, adding highlights to the top edges of the temple steps using a lighter color—or even a bit of white—will make it look like sunlight is gently hitting the surface!
