About this drawing

A Bengal cat has the personality of a pet and the coat of a jungle predator. The breed was developed in the United States in the later part of the twentieth century by crossing house cats with the Asian leopard cat, a small wild species.

Its fur is what stops people in their tracks. Instead of ordinary stripes, Bengals have spots or rosettes like a leopard's, on a background that ranges from golden brown to silver. The hair is short, dense and remarkably soft. There is also a marbled type, with sweeping swirls along the sides.

Life with a Bengal is rarely quiet. These cats climb, leap and investigate everything, and they are known for learning tricks quickly. Owners often describe them playing fetch, opening cabinets or batting at a running faucet. A home with one needs tall perches, puzzle toys and daily play, or the cat may invent its own entertainment.

Pet Bengals today are several generations removed from their wild ancestors and are considered domestic cats. Rules can still vary by location, though, and some cities and states restrict cats that are close to the original cross. Anyone thinking about adopting one should look into local laws first and be honest about how much attention this energetic breed will want.
