Look around your home and find places a cat might hide.
An organ in the roof of the mouth lets cats analyze scents by opening their mouths slightly.
A cat in the washer may sound like a joke, but it happens more often than you might think. The drum is dark, round and often full of clothes that smell like the family. To a cat, that is a perfect little cave, and an open door is an invitation.
Curiosity is part of being a cat. They want to check out every corner of their territory, especially if it is small and warm. Dryers, closets, cabinets and open drawers are just as tempting. The trouble is that these spots can turn dangerous if someone shuts the door or starts a machine without looking.
The fix is quick and easy. Before you run a load, look inside and pat the laundry with your hand. It also helps to keep the machine door closed between loads. If you cannot find your cat, check closets and cabinets before leaving the house.
Other things around the home can be risky too. Keep cleaning products locked away, watch out for dangling cords, and learn which houseplants are harmful. Lilies, for example, are very toxic to cats. A few simple habits go a long way toward keeping a nosy pet safe. To satisfy that urge to hide, try leaving out a cardboard box lined with an old T-shirt.
