Homing pigeons, close relatives of doves, carried important messages for armies during both World Wars.
A dove with olive branch is one of the oldest peace symbols people still use today. It appears on posters, greeting cards and murals whenever someone wants to share a hope for a calmer, kinder world.
The image comes from the story of Noah's Ark. In the Bible, Noah sends out a dove, and it returns carrying a fresh olive leaf, a sign that the floodwaters are going down and life can start again. Long before that, the ancient Greeks also linked olive branches with peace and good fortune.
In 1949, the Spanish artist Pablo Picasso created a lithograph of a dove that was chosen as the emblem of the World Peace Congress in Paris. His simple bird traveled around the globe on posters, and doves have been a worldwide peace symbol ever since. Picasso even named his daughter Paloma, the Spanish word for dove.
This page fits perfectly with the International Day of Peace on September 21. Ask kids why a gentle bird might have been chosen to stand for peace and what animal or picture they would pick instead.
