About this drawing

A girl hugging her cat shows just how close kids and pets can become. Still, cats have strong opinions about being held. Learning what they like will keep your furry friend happy and keep your arms free of scratches.

Begin by letting the cat come to you. Crouch down, hold out your hand slowly and allow a good sniff. A rub against your fingers is a yes. If the cat walks away, that is okay too. Try again later, and never chase it or pull it out of a hiding spot.

Ready to lift? Slide one hand under the chest and use the other to support the back legs, so the whole body feels safe. Do not pick up a cat by its legs, tail or the skin on its neck. If it starts to wiggle, gently put it back down.

When it comes to petting, most cats love attention on the cheeks, under the chin and on top of the head. The belly can be a trap, even if your cat rolls over to show it to you. Keep an eye out for flattened ears or a twitching tail, which mean it has had enough. A cat that feels respected will often come looking for a cuddle all by itself.
