Start with a light brown or beige base for the hyena’s body. The spots can be colored a deeper brown or warm gray. Darken the nose, ears, and tail tip for contrast. Use gentle strokes that follow the direction of the fur. The background trees and bushes can go in olive green tones, while the sky in soft blue and the distant hills in pale purple-gray help keep the focus on the hyena.
To add depth, shade under the belly, inside the legs, and below the neck. For highlights, simply leave a few areas lighter, especially on the back and snout. Kids using colored pencils can layer gently for shading. With watercolors, it’s best to leave white spaces unpainted for highlights.
