Many modern snow globes use tiny flakes of white plastic as snow.
A Merry Christmas snow globe is a tiny winter you can hold in your hand: give it a shake and snow starts falling over the village. It looks like magic, but there is some simple science inside.
A snow globe has three main parts: a clear dome of glass or plastic, a miniature scene and a base that seals everything in. The dome is filled almost to the top with liquid, usually water, plus small white particles that play the role of snow.
The secret to slow, drifting snow is the liquid. Makers often add glycerin, a clear, syrupy substance that makes the water thicker. The particles meet more resistance as they sink, so they float for a few seconds before settling, much like real flakes.
It also matters that very little air is left inside, so no big bubble forms at the top. Everything in the scene has to be waterproof, which is why the figures are made of plastic, resin or sealed ceramic. Today you can find snow globes of every size, from tiny ornaments to musical ones that play a holiday tune.
