About this drawing

A nativity with camels, an ox, a donkey and sheep is a familiar sight in homes and churches across America during the holidays. Families often wonder when to set it up and when to put it away, and tradition offers a few answers.

Many households put out their nativity at the start of Advent, four Sundays before Christmas, often on the same weekend they decorate the tree. In Spain, a popular date is December 8, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, which is a national holiday there.

Some families leave the manger empty at first and only place baby Jesus in it on Christmas Eve or Christmas morning. The Magi and their camels often start across the room and travel a little closer each day, reaching the stable on Epiphany, January 6.

Many people pack the nativity away after Epiphany or after the Baptism of the Lord a few days later. Others keep it up until February 2, Candlemas, which marks the presentation of Jesus in the Temple. Either way, wrapping each figure carefully is part of the ritual, ready for next year.
