Description
This drawing has everything you need to have fun colouring in: a cheerful little pirate, a ship in the background and a treasure chest full of loot. It’s perfect for using bright, bold colours and trying out different colour combinations. Use browns and golds for the chest, mix reds, blues and greens for the treasure items and colour the sea and sky with soft blues, leaving some white areas for the clouds. The ship is a good place to practise shading the sails and adding wood textures. And the pirates? Give them your own style! Skin, clothes, bandana, boots— – all of these are a good opportunity to experiment and play with colours.
Tips and tricks
Ideas and tips for colouring in the pirate drawing
Start with the main character. Pick skin and hair tones, then go for bright, fun colors on the bandana and clothes—reds, blues, greens, whatever fits your pirate’s vibe. Add shadows to the folds in the fabric using a slightly darker shade of your base color. The belt can be golden or silver. For the ship, use browns for the wood, ochres and beige for the sails, and maybe some grey or blue shadows. Keep the background light so it doesn’t distract from the foreground. The chest works well in dark brown with golden details, and the treasure is your chance to go wild: yellow coins, multicolored gems, green and blue bottles. Try blending with cotton swabs or combining colored pencils and markers for extra effects.
Fun fact: real pirates rarely buried treasure—they usually spent it fast! The eyepatches and bandanas weren’t just for looks—they helped with sun protection or covered injuries. Pirate ships were often smaller and faster than trade ships, perfect for quick attacks and getaways. And yes, there were famous pirates like Blackbeard… but there were also women pirates like Anne Bonny!
