Did you know?

Santa Claus Village in Rovaniemi receives letters from children all over the world.

About this drawing

Santa sewing his hat at home, surrounded by yarn with a reindeer at his side, makes us wonder where he really lives. Many say the North Pole, but Finland has its own answer: Rovaniemi, in Lapland.

Rovaniemi is the capital of Finnish Lapland and sits right on the Arctic Circle. Just outside town is Santa Claus Village, which welcomes visitors all year, especially in December when everything is buried in snow.

Visitors can meet Santa, mail postcards from his post office and step across a line on the ground that marks the Arctic Circle. Rides in sleighs pulled by reindeer or huskies are also popular, and both are traditional in the region.

Reindeer have been part of life in Lapland for centuries, and winter nights there are extremely long, with some days when the sun barely rises. On clear nights the northern lights may ripple across the sky. All of that has made Rovaniemi one of the most famous Christmas destinations on Earth. Anyone who cannot travel there can still write to Santa's main post office, and many get a reply. It is a lovely way to feel a bit of Lapland's magic from home.
