About this drawing

A concrete pump truck solves a practical problem: how to get tons of wet concrete to an upper floor or a corner no mixer truck can reach. Its answer is a very long boom with a pipe running inside it.

The boom comes in several sections that fold over the truck for the drive, like a pocketknife. On site, hydraulic cylinders unfold them one by one, and the tip can reach high and far. A flexible hose hangs from the end, and a worker steers it by hand.

Mixer trucks empty into a hopper at the back. Inside, two pistons take turns: one draws concrete in while the other pushes it into the pipe, creating a steady flow. Everything gets washed out at the end of the job, because concrete that hardens inside would clog the line for good.

Before the boom opens, the truck swings out its outriggers and sets them on pads to spread the weight. Without them it would tip, since the extended boom is extremely heavy. The operator runs it with a remote control strapped to the chest, standing where they can see everything.
