About this drawing

A dump truck unloading is one of the most common sights on any job site. Its big advantage is that it empties itself. Nobody has to shovel the load out, because the bed tips up and gravity does the rest.

Under the bed sits a hydraulic cylinder, sometimes made of several sections that slide out of each other like a telescope. When the driver flips a switch in the cab, pressurized oil stretches the cylinder and lifts the front of the bed. The tailgate swings open and the dirt slides out into a pile.

It takes care. The truck has to sit on firm, level ground, because with the bed raised its center of gravity climbs and it could tip sideways. Drivers also look up before raising the bed so it never touches overhead power lines.

That is why the worker guiding the dump stands at a safe distance where the driver can see them. A hard hat protects against falling rocks, and a reflective vest keeps them visible. Using agreed hand signals, they tell the driver when to back up, when to stop and when it is safe to lower the bed again.
