Did you know?

In Danish, hygge can be used as a verb and an adjective as well as a noun.

About this drawing

A girl knitting by the fire, wrapped in a blanket with tea and slippers nearby, captures the whole cozy trend in one scene. That way of savoring winter traces back to Denmark, where it is called hygge.

Hygge is a Danish word with no perfect English match. It describes a feeling of comfort, warmth and togetherness: candles glowing, a hot drink in hand, good conversation and a softly lit home while the cold presses at the windows. It is not about luxury but about simple pleasures.

Nordic winters are long and dark, so making home feel inviting is practical as well as pleasant. In the mid-2010s, a wave of books brought the idea to American and British readers, and it quickly spread into home decor, fashion and lifestyle.

That is where today's cozy aesthetic comes from, with its plaid throws, mugs, reading nooks and, yes, coloring pages. Calm activities like knitting, reading and coloring fit perfectly with the idea of slowing down and enjoying the moment. You do not need anything fancy to try it at home. A soft blanket, gentle lighting and an unhurried hour are all it takes to feel a little more hygge.
