About this drawing

A Christmas cat sleeping by the fireplace is the picture of holiday calm. Still, the season brings a few things into the house that are best kept away from curious pets.

Several classic December plants are not cat-friendly. Holly and mistletoe can cause vomiting and other trouble if nibbled. Poinsettias usually cause milder stomach upset, but they are still best out of reach. Lilies, often tucked into holiday bouquets, are especially dangerous for cats.

Food is another risk. Chocolate is toxic to cats and dogs, and so are grapes, onions and garlic, which turn up in many festive dishes. Cooked bones can splinter. The safest move is to skip sharing table scraps.

Don't forget ribbon, tinsel and string from wrapped presents. Cats love to bat them around, but swallowing them can be serious. With a few simple precautions, your cat can keep napping by the fire all season long. If you want festive greenery, artificial plants or high shelves are the safest options. And if your cat ever chews something suspicious, call your vet right away instead of waiting to see what happens. A safe holiday is a happy one for every member of the family.
