About this drawing

Anyone who owns a cat knows that a kitten in Christmas lights is not just a cute idea. It is close to a holiday tradition. Cats are born hunters, and dangling, shiny, swaying objects trigger the same instincts that would send them after a mouse or a bird in the wild.

Young cats are especially curious, since play is how they build the skills of stalking and pouncing. A tree loaded with ornaments looks like a giant indoor playground, complete with branches to climb and a high spot to survey the room. Even calm adult cats can be tempted when a new tree shows up with interesting outdoor smells.

Pet owners can keep the season safe with a few simple steps. Anchor the tree so it can't tip, hang breakable ornaments up high, and tuck cords out of reach or cover them, because some cats like to chew. Skip tinsel, which can cause serious trouble if swallowed, and keep lilies out of the house entirely, as they are highly toxic to cats. Poinsettias are milder but can still upset a cat's stomach. With those fixes in place, your furry friend can enjoy the holidays right alongside everyone else, probably from inside an empty gift box.
