Talk as a family about everything a pet needs before it comes home.
Many animal shelters run holiday foster programs in December.
A kitten and puppy at Christmas make an adorable picture, and plenty of kids put a pet at the top of their wish list. Animal shelters remind families every year, though, that a pet is a commitment, not a toy.
A dog or cat can live fifteen years or more, and through all that time it needs food, exercise or play, vet visits and lots of attention. That is why the decision should involve the whole family, with honest thought about space, time and cost.
The holidays are also a hectic time to bring an animal home. Guests, noise, rich food and changing schedules can overwhelm a newcomer. Many families find it easier to wait until things calm down so the new pet can settle in.
When everyone is ready, adopting from a shelter is a wonderful choice, since so many dogs and cats are waiting for homes. Some families wrap up a leash, a collar or a gift card on Christmas morning as a promise, then pick up their new friend a few weeks later. A pet becomes part of the family, so it deserves a decision made with care and patience.
