About this drawing

A sack of presents waiting by the tree brings to mind a favorite holiday game in American offices, classrooms and families: Secret Santa. It lets everyone give and receive a present without anyone having to buy gifts for the whole group.

The rules are simple. Everyone's name goes into a hat, and each person draws one without showing it. That person becomes your secret recipient, and you choose a gift for them without revealing who you are. If you draw your own name, you put it back and draw again.

Most groups set a spending limit so the gifts feel fair and nobody overspends. On exchange day, presents are handed out, and the giver's identity might stay secret or be revealed with a guessing game. Many groups now draw names online, which makes it easy to include relatives who live far away.

The fun is in thinking about someone else: what they like, what they need or what would make them laugh. Some of the best gifts are small or homemade, like a card, a craft or a drawing. For kids, it is also great practice in patience and keeping a secret.
