About this drawing

The Grinch with cookie in hand and a sly grin is one of the most famous holiday characters ever, even though he starts out hating Christmas. Dr. Seuss introduced him in the 1957 book How the Grinch Stole Christmas!

The Grinch is a green, furry grump who lives in a cave on a mountain above Whoville with his loyal dog, Max. Down below, the Whos celebrate Christmas with feasting, noise and singing, and the Grinch cannot stand it. So he dresses up as Santa and sneaks into town to steal every present, decoration and scrap of food.

On Christmas morning, though, he hears the Whos singing together anyway, with nothing at all. He realizes Christmas does not come from a store, and his small heart grows three sizes that day. He returns everything and joins the feast, even carving the roast beast.

The story has been adapted many times: an animated TV special in 1966 that still airs every December, a live-action movie in 2000 and an animated film from Illumination in 2018. The character is so well known that calling someone a Grinch is now everyday slang for anyone who grumbles about the holidays.
