About this drawing

A happy little car is a great way to learn how real cars work. Inside is a motor that turns the wheels. Some engines burn gas, and others are electric motors that run on a big battery you charge by plugging it in.

To go where we want, the driver turns the steering wheel, which points the front wheels left or right. Brakes slow the car down and stop it, and headlights light up the road at night. Bags can ride in the trunk or on a roof rack, a frame that sits on top of the car.

Kids always ride buckled up. In the United States, each state has its own car seat law, but most say young children need a car seat or booster until they are big enough for the seat belt to fit right. Everyone should buckle up in the back seat too. On long trips, stopping often to stretch your legs makes the ride a lot more fun.

Along the way, you can play games like counting red cars, spotting shapes in the clouds or finding letters on road signs from A to Z. Little games like these make a long drive feel a lot shorter.
