About this drawing

Look at this hatching dinosaur egg! All dinosaurs came out of eggs, just like baby chicks. A mother dinosaur laid her eggs in a nest. Then everyone had to wait until the babies were ready to come out.

Scientists have found fossil nests all over the world. In Montana, they found a place with lots and lots of dinosaur nests. Some nests had eggs laid in a circle. Others had neat rows. It's amazing that they have lasted for so many millions of years!

A lot of dinosaur eggs had hard shells, just like the eggs in your fridge. Some older ones may have been soft, more like turtle eggs. The babies were very small when they hatched. Even the very biggest dinosaurs came out of eggs not much bigger than a ball.

To break out of the shell, some babies had a tiny special tooth on the snout. They went tap, tap, tap until they made a hole. Then they wiggled out and saw the world for the very first time. Some stayed in the nest while their parents took care of them. Others could walk right away. Today, baby birds still hatch just like those dinosaurs did.
