About this drawing

Klimt The Kiss is one of the most famous works in European art and the crown jewel of the Belvedere museum in Vienna, Austria. Gustav Klimt painted it in 1907 and 1908, during his golden phase, when he covered his canvases with real gold leaf that shimmers in the light.

Klimt helped found the Vienna Secession, a group of artists who broke away from traditional academic art in the late 1800s. They believed art belonged everywhere, from paintings and buildings to furniture, jewelry and posters, and they wanted it to feel modern and decorative.

His love of gold grew even stronger after a trip to Ravenna, Italy, where he saw glittering Byzantine mosaics with golden backgrounds and flat, stylized figures. In The Kiss, the bodies almost disappear beneath the robes. The man's robe is filled with black and white rectangles, while the woman's dress swirls with circles and colorful flowers.

That mix of straight and curved shapes seems to merge the two figures into one. The couple kneels at the edge of a flowery meadow that stands out against the golden background. More than a century later, the painting remains a worldwide symbol of love and appears on everything from posters to mugs.
