Activity idea

Write a newspaper story about the theft of the Mona Lisa in 1911.

Did you know?

During World War II, the Mona Lisa was hidden outside Paris to keep it safe.

About this drawing

The Mona Lisa in Paris welcomes millions of visitors every year at the Louvre, but there was a time when her spot on the wall sat empty. On August 21, 1911, Leonardo da Vinci's portrait vanished from the museum, and more than a day passed before anyone realized it was gone.

The thief was Vincenzo Peruggia, an Italian handyman who had worked at the Louvre and knew the building well. He hid inside the museum, took the painting off the wall, slipped out with it under his clothes and kept it in his Paris apartment for more than two years. Police questioned many people but found no solid leads.

In 1913, Peruggia traveled to Florence and tried to sell the painting to an art dealer, who alerted the authorities. The Mona Lisa was recovered, displayed in several Italian cities and returned to the Louvre amid huge celebrations. Peruggia claimed he wanted to bring it back to Italy, Leonardo's homeland.

The theft made headlines around the world and turned an admired painting into the most famous one on the planet. Today the Mona Lisa sits behind bulletproof glass in a closely guarded gallery, and arriving early is the best way to see her without huge crowds.
