Did you know?

Asiatic lions have a long fold of skin along the belly that African lions usually don't.

About this drawing

A lion in the woods might seem perfectly normal, especially since people call this animal the king of the jungle. Here's the surprise, though: lions don't live in thick, steamy jungles at all. The nickname stuck anyway, even if it isn't quite right.

Lions like wide-open spaces. Most of them live on the savanna, a land of tall grass with trees spread far apart. Others live in areas of shrubs and open woodland. In places like these, lions can spot food from far away and walk easily. A crowded jungle would make hunting as a group much harder.

Today nearly all lions live in Africa, south of the huge Sahara Desert. There is one other wild home: the Gir Forest in India. It's a dry forest, nothing like a rainy jungle, and the lions there are a bit smaller than most African ones.

Long ago, lions lived in many more countries, but now they have far less room. That's why parks and wildlife reserves matter so much. If you ever visit one, look closely at the golden grass. A lion's color helps it blend right in.
