The Rudolph stop-motion TV special from 1964 is one of the longest-running holiday specials in the US.

About this drawing

Rudolph with lights on his antlers is the most famous reindeer in the world, and his shiny red nose is his trademark. It feels like he has always been part of Christmas, but his story is younger than you might think.

Rudolph was created in 1939 for a free illustrated booklet handed out to children by a Chicago department store chain. A staff copywriter wrote the story in rhyme about a young reindeer who was teased by the others because of his glowing nose.

One foggy Christmas Eve, Santa realizes he cannot see well enough to fly. He spots Rudolph and asks him to lead the sleigh with his nose. The very thing that made Rudolph feel like an outsider ends up saving Christmas, and the other reindeer finally cheer for him.

A decade later the story became a hit song that is still played every December, and in 1964 it was turned into a stop-motion TV special that families still watch each year. Rudolph's message stays simple and timely: being different is not something to hide, and everyone has something special to offer.
