The Galápagos penguin lives right near the equator, thanks to cold ocean currents.
A snowy forest penguin is a storybook idea, since wild penguins do not live among pine trees. Nearly every species is found in the Southern Hemisphere, spending its life between the shoreline and the sea.
Many people picture all penguins in Antarctica, yet only a few species breed there, such as emperor and Adélie penguins. Others live in much milder places, along the coasts of South America, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. Scientists recognize somewhere around eighteen to twenty species.
What they share is cold, food-rich water. Chilly ocean currents carry plenty of fish to their coasts, which is why some penguins can live far from any ice. In South Africa, African penguins even nest on sandy beaches close to town.
Here is another fun surprise: penguins and polar bears never meet in the wild. Polar bears live in the Arctic, at the top of the world, while penguins live down south. They only share a page in drawings like this one, where imagination brings the cold-weather crowd together. So if you want to see penguins in real life, you would need to travel south, or visit an aquarium or zoo that cares for them.
