Leave the snowballs white and add just a gray shadow along the bottom.
Crumple white paper into balls and play a toss game with a box.
An emperor penguin can stay underwater for more than twenty minutes.
A penguin with snowballs looks ready for a snow day, but the place this bird truly shines is in the water. On land it waddles slowly; underwater it turns into a speedy, agile swimmer.
Penguins are birds that cannot fly. Over time their wings became stiff, flat flippers, and they beat them as if they were flying through the sea. Their feet and tail act like a rudder for steering and braking.
A torpedo-shaped body helps them glide with little effort, and their bones are denser than those of most birds, which makes diving easier. Some species, like the emperor penguin, plunge to impressive depths in search of fish, squid and krill.
Even their colors are a clever trick. Seen from below, a white belly blends in with the bright surface; seen from above, a dark back disappears against the deep water. That camouflage helps them sneak up on prey and avoid seals. Some penguins can even leap out of the water like dolphins, a move called porpoising, which lets them breathe without slowing down. On land they may look clumsy, but in the ocean penguins are true champions.
