About this drawing

A stained glass angel like this one echoes the great cathedral windows of Europe, where the archangel Gabriel is one of the most frequently portrayed figures. He is the messenger who carries the biggest news in the Christmas story.

In the Gospel of Luke, Gabriel appears to Mary in Nazareth and tells her she will give birth to Jesus. Christians call this moment the Annunciation and mark it on March 25, exactly nine months before Christmas Day. Luke also says Gabriel first announced the birth of John the Baptist to his father, Zechariah.

Gabriel is not limited to the Christian story. In the Hebrew Bible he helps the prophet Daniel understand his visions, and in Islam he is known as Jibril, the angel who delivered the Quran. That makes him one of the very few angels known by name across all three Abrahamic faiths.

Artists usually show Gabriel with outstretched wings and a raised hand, often holding a white lily, a staff or a scroll. Gothic glassmakers filled his robes with rich color because sunlight pouring through the windows made these scenes glow, turning church walls into picture books for people who could not read.
