About this drawing

Three kings walking toward Bethlehem mark the last stop of the Christmas season in much of the world: Epiphany on January 6, a day that comes with its own special cake.

In Spain and Latin America that cake is the rosca or roscón de reyes, a ring of sweet bread topped with candied fruit and sugar. Its round shape suggests a crown, and the bright pieces of fruit stand in for jewels. Hidden inside is a tiny figurine, and in Spain also a dried bean.

Families slice the ring together, and everyone hopes to find a surprise. In Spain, the person who gets the figurine is crowned king or queen for the day, while the one who finds the bean is supposed to buy next year's cake. In Mexico, the little figure stands for the baby Jesus.

Many Americans know a cousin of this treat: the king cake of New Orleans, which arrived with French and Spanish settlers. There it is eaten from Epiphany until Mardi Gras, covered in purple, green and gold sugar, with a small baby hidden inside. Whether it is called rosca, roscón or king cake, the idea is the same, a sweet, shared cake that brings a bit of luck to the table.
