In many stories Batman has no phone number the police can call, so they rely on the signal.

About this drawing

Batman and the Bat-Signal make up one of the most famous scenes in comics. When the Gotham police need help, they switch on a giant spotlight on the roof of headquarters and shine the bat symbol onto the clouds.

The one flipping the switch is usually Commissioner James Gordon, one of the few honest cops in town. Gordon and Batman trust each other completely, even though Gordon has no idea who is under the cowl. Together they form a team that keeps the city's villains in check.

The signal does two jobs at once. It tells Batman there is trouble, and it sends a warning to criminals. When they spot that bat in the sky, they know the Dark Knight is on his way.

The bat symbol has changed shape many times over the years, with longer or shorter wings, sometimes inside a yellow oval and sometimes on its own. Even so, people everywhere recognize it in a second, and it is now one of the best-known logos in the world. Many fans even shine homemade bat symbols on their bedroom walls with a flashlight and a paper cutout.
