Before engines, fire pumps were pulled by horses or by people.
A city fire truck is like a giant toolbox on wheels. It carries a water tank, a powerful pump that pushes the water out hard, and long hoses to reach the flames. When the tank runs low, firefighters hook their hoses to the red hydrants you see on sidewalks.
Many trucks also have a ladder that stretches way up to rescue people from tall buildings or spray water on roofs. They carry helmets, heat-resistant gear, air tanks for breathing in smoke, flashlights and tools for opening doors or freeing people from cars after a crash.
In an emergency, the truck flashes its lights and sounds its siren so other drivers pull over and let it through. In the United States, the number to call is 911, and it works from any phone at any time. Kids should learn it, stay calm, say what is happening and where, and never call as a joke, because the line must stay open for real emergencies.
Firefighters also visit schools to teach fire safety, like how to crawl low under smoke and where to meet outside if the smoke alarm goes off. On those visits, kids sometimes get to peek inside the truck.
