About this drawing

A demolition excavator does not carry a digging bucket. It carries tools for breaking. This one uses a crusher, a pair of steel jaws that bite into concrete and snap it apart while pulling free the steel bars hidden inside.

Machine demolition happens bit by bit, from the top down, almost like taking a building apart. For tall structures, there are high-reach excavators with extra-long arms that work several stories up while keeping the cab far from falling debris. The cab is reinforced with guards in case chunks fly.

Dust is one of the biggest challenges. While the machine works, crews spray water from hoses or misting cannons that trap particles before they drift into nearby streets. Fences and netting go up to protect neighbors and passersby.

Rubble no longer just gets dumped. Concrete is crushed and reused as fill or as a base for new roads, metal is melted into fresh steel and clean wood can be turned into new products. In a way, an old building becomes part of the ones that come next. Demolition crews also check for nearby gas and power lines before the first bite.
