About this drawing

Few symbols in world soccer are recognized as quickly as the FC Barcelona logo, and every section of it means something. A young Swiss enthusiast and a mix of friends from several countries started the club in 1899, and over time its badge turned into a small portrait of the city and of Catalonia, the region around it.

Look at the top left and you find the red cross of Saint George, the patron saint of Catalonia. Beside it run the stripes of the Catalan flag. The middle band carries the club initials, and the lower half is saved for the blue and deep red that fans call blaugrana. Sitting right in the center is an old leather ball, a nod to the early days of the game.

Here's something American sports fans may find surprising: the club is owned by its members rather than a single owner, and those members vote for the president. Home games are played at the Camp Nou, a huge stadium that opened in 1957. Barcelona is also known for La Masia, its youth academy, where young players learn a patient style built on short passes. Fans like to say the club stands for more than winning, and the crest is how they show it.
