About this drawing

The skyline on the Malaga CF crest is the real thing. Those towers and walls recall the Alcazaba and Gibralfaro Castle, two medieval strongholds that overlook the city from a steep hill near the harbor. Malaga is on the southern coast of Spain, and anyone arriving by cruise ship sees the fortress walls before almost anything else.

The Alcazaba dates back to the era of Muslim rule in Spain. It was part fortress and part palace, with courtyards, fountains and gardens tucked behind layers of walls. Gibralfaro stands higher up and was used to keep watch over the bay. A walled path links them, and today tourists climb up for views of the Mediterranean that make the sweaty hike worth it.

Soccer in the city goes back further than the current club, which took its name in the 1990s after the older Club Deportivo Malaga folded. The new team carried on with the same fans and the same blue and white stripes. It plays at La Rosaleda, next to the Guadalmedina River, and draws big, family-friendly crowds in any division. Malaga is also the birthplace of the painter Pablo Picasso, so kids who like art have a reason to look the city up. It sits on the Costa del Sol, the Sun Coast, and the name is no exaggeration.
