Players and fans alike go by the nickname rojillos, which means little reds.
Most teams pick a name that sounds tough, so the Osasuna crest comes with a charming twist: the word means health, or strength, in Basque. The club was formed in 1920 in Pamplona, in the northern region of Navarre, when two local teams joined forces. Instead of copying an English word, as many early Spanish clubs did, its founders chose something from their own language.
Each part of the emblem has a meaning. The letters C, A and O stand for Club Atletico Osasuna. The lion comes from the coat of arms of Pamplona. Then there's the chain, which is the region's most famous symbol. According to tradition, King Sancho VII of Navarre broke through a wall of chains guarding the enemy camp at the Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa in 1212, and those links have appeared on the Navarrese arms ever since.
Home games take place at El Sadar, a compact stadium where the stands sit close to the field and the crowd can rattle visiting teams. The club also leans on local talent developed through its own youth system. If Pamplona sounds familiar, it's probably because of the Running of the Bulls, held every July during the San Fermin festival. Everyone dresses in white with a red scarf, so the team's color fits in rather nicely with the biggest party in town.
