About this drawing

A fire rescue helicopter is one of the fastest tools crews have when a wildfire races through a forest. While firefighters on the ground dig fire lines and spray water, helicopters can reach steep hills and remote spots in minutes.

Many firefighting helicopters carry a collapsible bucket on a long line. The pilot dips it into a lake, river or reservoir, flies back over the fire and opens a valve to release the water exactly where crews need it. Other helicopters use a snorkel hose to fill a tank underneath, and some carry fire retardant instead of plain water.

Most wildfires in the United States are started by people, from unattended campfires to sparks from equipment. That is why Smokey Bear has reminded Americans since 1944 that only you can prevent wildfires. Fires destroy animal habitats and can leave hillsides bare, although some forests are adapted to recover from natural fires over time.

This scene is a good way to talk with kids about the wildfires they hear about on the news, the bravery of fire crews and simple rules like never playing with matches and always drowning a campfire.
