On this sheet

Mario walking with a surprised face on the right and a round chained creature with big teeth and one shiny eye on the left.

Coloring tip

Fill the Chain Chomp with black or charcoal and leave the teeth and eye shine white.

Activity idea

Count the chain links, then draw a longer chain and decide how far the Chomp can reach.

Did you know?

Mario's famous mustache was partly a practical choice, since tiny early pixels could not show a clear mouth.

About this drawing

Mario and Chain Chomp have been crossing paths since the late 1980s, and the toothy ball is still one of the enemies players fear most. It is a round black creature with a huge eye and a mouth full of jagged teeth, chained to a stake in the ground.

When anyone comes near, it lunges forward as far as the chain allows, snapping its jaws. Players quickly learn to watch the rhythm, wait for it to pull back and then rush past before it charges again.

If that sounds like a guard dog on a leash, that is no accident. The idea is widely said to come from a childhood memory of a dog that once chased its creator. In a few games Mario can break the stake, and the freed Chomp goes rolling off, smashing everything in its way.

Mario himself first showed up in a 1981 arcade game under the name Jumpman. Since then he has kept the red cap, blue overalls and plumber's job, even though he spends far more time jumping on enemies than fixing pipes.
