About this drawing

A Santa bubble bath, full of suds and sweets, is a fun way to picture his rest after the busiest night of the year. The candy canes steal the show, and they are one of the most recognizable treats of the season.

Their exact origin is fuzzy. A popular legend says that in seventeenth-century Germany, plain white sugar sticks were handed out to children during Christmas services. It is a charming story, though no records confirm it.

What we do know is that candy canes were white for a long time, and the red stripes became common around the start of the twentieth century. The hooked shape makes them easy to hang on the tree, so they doubled as ornaments. Peppermint is still the classic flavor.

Over the years, the candy cane jumped from candy shops to cards, sweaters and wrapping paper. In the United States, December hardly feels complete without one. Red, white and twisted, it says Christmas at a single glance. Some families even hang a candy cane on the tree for every person in the house, so everyone gets a sweet treat on Christmas morning.
