About this drawing

Santa with string lights tangled around him sums up a December ritual in many American homes: untangling the strands and putting up the lights. These days most of those strands are LED, and they work very differently from the old bulbs.

Classic incandescent bulbs contain a very thin metal filament. When electricity flows through it, the filament gets so hot that it glows. The catch is that most of the energy turns into heat rather than light, which is why old bulbs get warm to the touch and use a lot of power.

LED stands for light-emitting diode. It is a tiny component that gives off light directly when current passes through it, with no need to heat a filament. LEDs use far less electricity to produce the same brightness, stay cool and last much longer.

That efficiency is why many cities and big holiday displays have switched to LEDs, letting them light entire streets for a fraction of the energy. At home, cooler bulbs also lower the risk of something overheating. Even so, it is smart to turn the lights off at bedtime or when nobody is home.
