Watch a real spider with a magnifying glass, without touching it, and count its legs.
Jumping spiders can leap many times their own body length.
Spider-Man crouching on ledge poses are among his most famous looks. Knees wide, body low and one hand reaching ahead, he looks a lot like a real spider waiting patiently on a wall.
The pose has a purpose. Staying low spreads out his weight and keeps a firm grip on walls and ceilings. The comics explain that he can stick to almost any surface with his hands and feet, sometimes even through gloves and boots.
Real spiders climb thanks to thousands of tiny hairs on the tips of their legs. Each hair splits into even smaller ones, and together they create enough grip for the spider to walk upside down across a window without slipping.
Some spiders, like jumping spiders, also have sharp eyesight and judge distances carefully before they pounce. Spider-Man shares that mix of patience, balance and speed, which is why artists so often draw him frozen on a ledge, a split second before he leaps into action. Real spiders use that same stillness to save energy and surprise their prey. They can wait for hours without moving a single leg, then strike in a flash.
