A dalmatian can trot dozens of miles in a single day without wearing out.
A dalmatian running through the countryside fits the breed's story perfectly, because few dogs have ever run as much. For centuries, dalmatians escorted horse-drawn carriages, trotting beside them or out in front for mile after mile.
Their job was to clear the way through crowds, keep stray dogs at a distance and guard the horses and luggage whenever the carriage stopped. At night they slept in the stables with the horses, which they got along with wonderfully. Wealthy English families showed off their dalmatians like stylish accessories.
In the 1800s, American fire companies used horse-drawn engines, and dalmatians ran ahead barking to warn people to get out of the way. Once motorized fire trucks arrived, the dogs were no longer needed, but firefighters kept them as mascots and symbols. Many firehouses across the United States still have a dalmatian today.
That history explains why dalmatians have such endless stamina. They need a daily run, long walks with their families and plenty of activity. A country road at sunset, like the one in this picture, is the perfect place for a dalmatian to burn off energy and be happy.
