Many airlines let small dogs fly in the cabin inside a carrier tucked under the seat.

About this drawing

A puppy in a purse looks like the picture of easy travel, and small dogs really can tag along with their families to lots of places. To keep the trip safe, though, it is better to use a proper pet carrier than an ordinary bag.

A good carrier has ventilation on several sides, a sturdy bottom and enough room for the dog to turn around and lie down. In the car, it should be buckled in with a seat belt or placed on the floor behind a seat, never loose or on the driver's lap. Trains and airlines each have their own pet rules.

Before a long trip, it helps to get the dog used to the carrier at home by leaving it open with a blanket and a treat inside. Pack water, a bowl, bags, the dog's usual food and its vaccination records. On warm days, a dog should never be left alone in a parked car.

Even a tiny dog needs to walk on its own four paws. Strolling, sniffing and meeting other dogs are essential for its health and happiness. A purse or carrier is for getting from place to place, not for spending the whole day inside.
