About this drawing

A chihuahua in a basket fits almost anywhere, because the chihuahua is the smallest dog breed in the world. Many adults weigh less than a bag of flour, yet they have huge, bold personalities and fierce loyalty to their families.

The breed is named after the state of Chihuahua in northern Mexico, where it became known in the 1800s. Many experts think it descends from the techichi, a little companion dog kept by the Toltecs and other peoples of ancient Mexico long before Europeans arrived.

Chihuahuas come in short-coat and long-coat versions and in lots of colors, from fawn and black to white, chocolate and spotted. Their apple-shaped heads, big eyes and oversized upright ears are what make them so recognizable.

Because they are so small, chihuahuas get cold easily and love warm spots like a cushioned basket or a lap. They also need gentle handling, since they are fragile, even if they act like they are as tough as a big dog. To stay healthy, a chihuahua needs short daily walks, gentle play and carefully measured meals, since even a little extra weight is a lot for such a tiny body. Many live fifteen years or more with good care.
