About this drawing

A rottweiler puppy looks like a stuffed toy, but it will grow into a big, powerful dog. Its black coat with rust-colored markings on the brows, muzzle, chest and legs is the trademark of a breed with a hardworking past.

The rottweiler is named after Rottweil, a town in southern Germany that was famous for its cattle market. For centuries, butchers and farmers there used these dogs to drive cattle, guard the money from sales and pull small carts loaded with meat, earning them the nickname butcher's dogs.

Once railroads took over moving livestock, the breed nearly vanished. Its intelligence and strength saved it, and rottweilers found new jobs as police dogs, search and rescue dogs and guardians, roles they still fill in many countries, including the United States.

At home, a rottweiler is calm, loyal and deeply attached to its family. It needs steady, positive training from puppyhood, plenty of exercise and lots of time with its people. Well socialized, a rottie becomes a gentle, devoted companion that loves simply being part of family life. Rotties also love having a job to do, whether that is learning new tricks, carrying a small backpack on walks or practicing obedience games in the yard.
