About this drawing

A husky puppy wins hearts with its eyes and fluffy coat, but the breed was made for serious work. Siberian huskies come from northeastern Siberia, where the Chukchi people bred them to pull light sleds over long distances in freezing weather.

Their bodies are built for bitter cold. A thick double coat traps warmth close to the skin while an outer layer sheds snow and wind. When a husky sleeps outdoors, it curls into a ball and tucks its nose under its bushy tail to stay warm.

Huskies arrived in Alaska in the early 1900s to compete in sled races. They became famous in 1925, when relay teams of sled dogs rushed life-saving medicine to the snowbound town of Nome, a journey remembered today by the Iditarod race and a statue of Balto in New York's Central Park.

Today huskies are friendly, outgoing and playful family dogs, with a mischievous streak. They need lots of exercise, love to run and are famous for their howls and talkative yowls. In warm climates, they need extra care to stay cool. A husky's double coat also sheds heavily twice a year, so regular brushing keeps its fur healthy and the house a little less hairy during that season.
