About this drawing

A bulldog on a leash moves with a slow, rolling waddle that is typical of this stocky, short-legged breed. Its flat, wrinkly face, wide jaw and serious expression make it one of the easiest dogs in the world to recognize.

The English bulldog had a rough start: centuries ago, it was used in cruel shows involving bulls, which have long been banned. Over time, breeders turned it into a calm, affectionate companion that is wonderfully patient with kids. These days a bulldog would much rather nap on the couch.

That short snout comes with a downside, though. Flat-faced dogs, called brachycephalic breeds, have a harder time breathing, snore a lot and struggle to cool off, since dogs lose heat mainly by panting. In summer, it is best to walk them early in the morning or in the evening, offer water often and keep them from running hard in the heat.

Gently cleaning the folds on their faces keeps moisture from building up, and a healthy weight helps them breathe more easily. With easygoing walks and lots of love, a bulldog becomes a loyal, funny companion, even if it can be a bit stubborn.
