About this drawing

A Great Dane sitting in the park never goes unnoticed. It is one of the tallest dog breeds in the world, and some males stand more than thirty inches at the shoulder. Standing on their hind legs, many are taller than an adult person, yet their personalities are sweet and calm.

Despite the name, the breed was developed in Germany, where it is called the German mastiff. Long ago these dogs hunted wild boar, a job that took enormous strength and courage. Over time they became guardians of castles and noble estates, and later beloved family companions.

The most famous Great Dane of all is Scooby-Doo, the cartoon dog who solves mysteries with his friends and is always hungry for a Scooby Snack. His creators chose a Great Dane and gave him a jumpy, goofy personality that is the opposite of his size, which made him even funnier.

Living with such a big dog takes space, an extra-large bed and good training from puppyhood, because Great Danes grow incredibly fast. Walks should stay gentle while they are young to protect their joints. They are affectionate, sensitive dogs that love leaning on their people for cuddles.
