About this drawing

A droopy-eared bloodhound has an unmistakable face: wrinkles everywhere, sad-looking eyes and ears that nearly drag on the ground. Behind that sweet, sleepy look is the best tracker in the dog world, able to follow a scent trail for miles.

Bloodhounds, also known as St. Hubert hounds, were bred in medieval monasteries in what is now Belgium. They can follow a person's trail even days after that person passed by, which is why police and search teams use them to find missing people and lost children.

Their whole body helps their nose. Long ears brush the ground as they walk and stir scent particles up toward the snout. The folds on the face and the loose skin on the neck trap those smells and keep them close, almost like a net. On top of that, a bloodhound's nose is huge and very moist.

At home, a bloodhound is calm, patient and affectionate, though it can be stubborn once it finds an interesting smell. It needs long, sniffy walks and should stay on a leash, because when it locks onto a trail it forgets everything else. Be warned: bloodhounds drool a lot!
