About this drawing

A cocker spaniel puppy is famous for its long, wavy ears that seem to fly when it runs. Behind that sweet face is a hunting dog with deep roots in the British Isles, where spaniels were bred to flush birds out of thick brush.

The name comes from the woodcock, a bird that hides in forests and that these little spaniels were especially good at finding and flushing. The smallest spaniels in each litter often got the job, and over time they became a breed of their own.

Two versions developed. The English cocker spaniel is a bit taller with a longer muzzle, while the American cocker spaniel is smaller with a fuller coat. In the United States, the American cocker was one of the most popular breeds for decades and starred as Lady in Disney's Lady and the Tramp.

Today cockers are cheerful, affectionate family dogs that love running outdoors. Those long ears need extra care, though: because they hang down and trap moisture, they should be checked and cleaned regularly. Regular brushing keeps their silky coat free of tangles, and a quick check after every walk helps catch burrs or seeds stuck in their feathery fur and ears.
