About this drawing

A dalmatian puppy hides a surprise most people never hear about: dalmatians are born completely white. For the first days of life there is not a single spot to be seen, and the first little dark dots start to show up at around two weeks old.

From then on, spots keep appearing and darkening over the first months. Every dalmatian has its own one-of-a-kind pattern, like a fingerprint, so no two are exactly alike. Spots can even show up inside the mouth and on the paw pads.

The breed became world famous thanks to Disney's 101 Dalmatians, where Pongo and Perdita race to rescue their puppies from the wicked Cruella de Vil. After the movie, lots of families wanted a dalmatian of their own without realizing how active these dogs are.

Dalmatians were bred to run long distances and have tons of energy. They need long walks, active play and lots of company. Some are born deaf in one or both ears, so responsible breeders test puppies' hearing early on. Daily runs, fetch in the park and puzzle toys help a young dalmatian burn energy and stay calm at home, so it is a great match for active families.
