Dalmatians have an unusual metabolism that makes them prone to forming urinary stones.
A spotted dalmatian dog like this one shows off the breed's athletic, elegant build, with long legs, a deep chest and spots from head to tail. Its exact origin is a mystery, but the name points to Dalmatia, a region along the coast of Croatia on the Adriatic Sea.
Paintings and records from several centuries ago already show spotted dogs much like dalmatians in that area. From there they spread across Europe, and it was in England that the breed took the shape we know today. Over the years dalmatians have worked as hunting dogs, guard dogs and companions.
Their bodies are built for endurance. A dalmatian can trot for hours without getting tired, so it needs lots of daily exercise. It also has a biological quirk: unlike nearly all other dogs, it processes certain substances in food differently, so it should drink plenty of water and eat a suitable diet.
At home, dalmatians are playful, loving and very attached to their families. They like to be part of everything and do not do well left alone. With long walks, games and patient training, a dalmatian becomes a loyal, energetic partner for active families.
